Paxton Media Group dates from 1896, when a group of investors headed by William F. Paxton launched the Evening Sun by buying the assets of the failing Paducah Standard in Kentucky. Paxton’s descendants continue to run the publishing business today.

The family-owned media group owns daily newspapers in Midwestern and Southern states, including its flagship paper the Paducah Sun and the Herald-Sun in Durham, N.C. The company also owns several dozen weekly papers and more than 100 free papers, as well as a television station, WPSD, an NBC affiliate, in Paducah.
